A rich, finely detailed black kitchen is the indisputable social hub of this stylishly refurbished Windsor residence. As an intensely used space, where food is prepared frequently for guests and home-bodies alike, an integral part of this kitchen renovation’s brief is that it is spatially functional, interactive, flexible, and connects to both indoor and outdoor living. The Kitchen had to work hard, but be able to rest as a beautiful object as well. Balancing function within the kitchen design, is a desire for a highly crafted finish. Natural light streams in from the adjacent courtyard throughout the day, playing on the rich textures and colours of the black detailing, porcelain benchtops, timber joinery and concrete floor. The connection to the courtyard and adjacent park play a vital role in material selections, complementing the natural colours of the landscape. The architect’s strong eye for detailing connects materials effortlessly, through shadow-lines and planes. A restrained use of colour, alongside an Alternative Surfaces flooring, delivers the natural beauty of a concrete floor, while living with the ease and warmth of latex polymer. The result is a streamlined and intuitive kitchen, which is not only focussed on design and function, but responds to the rich architectural history around it.
