A stately Spanish Mission residence receives a contemporary makeover, resulting in an exceptional extension that, beyond the heritage fabric of the street frontage, shifts and splits into two private residences. The rear of the house is opened out, to provide dwellings with substantial vistas to the harbour and surrounds, with a rooftop pool adding to the drama. Characterised by the clean, simple detailing and generous visual mass and height of contemporary architecture, these residential extensions are an outstanding example of how to adapt existing built fabric, transforming a grand family home into two unparalleled luxury residences. The interior design and materials combine ease and comfort, with a conservative palette that does not challenge the user, but rather evokes a calm order through its subtle hues – a monochromatic home of smooth surfaces and planes, light and shadow. By day and by night the home glows, with every surface harnessing natural and artificial light. This project is a testament to DKO’s design philosophy, of creating spaces that address the way people live and interact with friends and family.
