Rising 19 levels above the 1910 utilitarian brick façade of a former motor garage, Infinity Place has been designed as a sister to the neighbouring University Square (also by DKO). A double volume entry foyer on Berkeley Street establishes the main entrance with a covered garden and landscaped relaxation space for students, leading the eye towards a sculptural curved steel stair rising to the level two communal kitchen and dining zone. Non-original doors and windows to the Elizabeth Street heritage façade have been replaced with blackened steel frames and reveals to doors and windows, responding to the industrial character of the streetscape, with the exterior face paint removed and brick face refurbished to its former glory. The ground floor links Elizabeth to Berkeley Streets with lobby, reception and communal spaces unifying the zone. A central pod in curved glass offers quiet space for study with adjacent retail creating an active street presence while providing additional food and beverage options for the students living above. Comfortable study booths surround the central pod proffering a mixed typology of spaces for individual and group study.
The precinct’s industrial aesthetic is continued into the interior with blackened steel, concrete and glass featuring throughout the student spaces, with highlights of warm timber and grey laminate. A mixed typology of accommodation is offered throughout the tower with single studios, one bed, three bed and six bed dual-level terrace style accommodation. The palette for each of the 230 dwellings has been kept deliberately muted – avoiding the bright colours typical in some university accommodation – to allow student’s the ability to personalise their space for the duration of their stay. The soft palette creates a more mature feeling, respecting the mentality of many modern students. Integrated joinery fashions extensive space for storage and study with premium fittings and fixtures ensuring longevity to the interior spaces, creating robust environments that will stand the test of time.
