Project Description +

House D is a contemporary family residence designed to meet the growing needs of a young, social family in the affluent suburb of Hawthorn.

Surrounded by opulent residences in one of Melbourne\'s most prestigious streets, this 3 storey house of generous proportions sits boldly in an elevated position on a 500m² block and is orientated to ensure an abundance of natural light and idyllic garden and city vistas. Concrete, steel and zinc adorn the exterior of the dwelling with a timber lined soffit, enveloping the interior within.

The design of the interior was optimised for function and ease of mobility to fit in with the couple\'s busy lifestyle and to meet the demands of raising a young family. Linear skylights positioned strategically throughout the dwelling allow natural sunlight to penetrate and bounce light off the warm finish palette of oak timber, raw concrete, marble, crisp white joinery and nuances of thin black detailing.

At the core of the house is the kitchen which features a large oversized concrete island bench, acting as a gathering space for friends and family. State of the art integrated appliances and high quality fittings and fixtures are encased with oak veneer, while a hidden scullery tucks additional bench space, storage and appliances out of sight.

The facade is fully operable with glazed sliding doors, allowing the line of interior and exterior to be blurred. The social areas of the kitchen, lounge, pool, BBQ and sophisticated landscaping by Jack Merlo are seemingly morphed into one large entertainment hub.

The staircase, with its subtly curved thin black balustrade is a sculpture in its own right and gives the dwelling a cutting-edge, sleek edge while helping to visually connects the 3 storeys together. The basement comprises a generous laundry, gym, cinema and wine cellar, while the first floor houses four generously sized bedrooms and rumpus room, all fitted with in-built wardrobes and study nooks, bathed in natural light. The master suite includes an expansive W.I.R. and luxurious marble-clad ensuite with floor to ceiling bluestone tiling and a freestanding bath. Added extras including a lift, laundry chute, hydronic heating and retractable fly screens ensure this home is extremely practicable and liveable while harmoniously maintaining a strong aesthetic.
